Emotions or feelings develop as a result of your circumstances, moods or relationships with other people. They are an essential part of everyday life and influence what you do, although sometimes you might not be aware of this.
For most people, emotions can make life both better and worse. You may experience these emotions very intensely and this can be overwhelming. When emotions are painful, you often want to get rid of the pain, resulting in you acting in an unhelpful way that can cause you further suffering and distress and sometimes others around you.
People sometimes describe this as their emotions being in control of them, rather than them being in control of their emotions. You may experience some of the following:
- Feeling overwhelmed or drained by your emotions
- Feeling intensely frustrated, anxious, angry or low..
- Your feelings get in the way when you’re interacting with other people.
- Difficulty expressing or showing emotions
